Summer is a conflicting season for goths. On the one hand, you have amazing festivals and can show off your outfit without needing a big jacket. Conversely, a goth wardrobe doesn’t lend itself to hot climes.

As much as we’d all love to layer up our black clothing and stomp around in our big boots all year round, we also don’t want to get heatstroke!

At Attitude Clothing, we’ve been through many a hot day, learning how to put together a gothic summer outfit without feeling like we’ll melt into a puddle or turn into dust. We’re happy to report that you can, in fact, survive the summer while still looking and feeling like your best gothic self.

Tips for creating gothic summer outfits

  1. SPF is your new best friend.

Before we even begin on clothing tips, we can’t stress enough how important it is to slap on the sun cream! Keep yourself layered up throughout the day, and always re-apply if you have been in the water. Protecting fresh tattoos from the sun is especially important, so keep them covered as much as possible or ensure they’re smothered in factor 50.

  1. Choose lightweight fabrics.

This may seem obvious, but your thickest, heaviest black band tee will not be your friend on the hottest days. Instead, opt for lightweight materials. Take the opportunity to rock some mesh pieces like dresses and tops that allow you to look and feel cool. Mesh is an especially good choice for festival ‘fits! Breathable fabrics are your friend through summer. It’s not worth risking heatstroke for the sake of fashion.

The Drama Queen Top from Banned Apparel is one of our faves for building gothic summer outfits. Layer over a bralette or tank top, or wear it on its own for a cool, edgy look. This wardrobe essential looks amazing with denim shorts or a flowy skirt, then add your favourite chains and accessories for a sick festival look.

  1. Fishnet tights. Need we say more?

Fishnets are a wardrobe staple for any goth and come in handy in summer. Of course, you could go bare-legged, but sometimes you need something extra to finish your outfit. Fishnets are a great solution. They bring an extra dimension to your look without adding unwanted heat. Just remember to wear sun cream underneath to avoid any funky tan lines! Find your favourites in our collection of tights at Attitude Clothing.

  1. Accessorise!

When your look’s missing something and extra clothes aren’t an option, accessories are the best way to go when creating gothic summer outfits. The hot weather provides plenty of opportunities for accessories. Sunglasses, jewellery and chains all have the chance to take centre stage.

We love a pair of Retro Rectangular Sunglasses for gothic summer outfits. They make any look instantly cooler and, most importantly, protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. Plus, they make a great hair accessory when the sun’s gone down!

  1. Waterproof makeup will be your saviour.

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you must neglect eyeliner. Waterproof makeup will be a lifesaver on hot days, helping you avoid a makeup meltdown. But, honestly, even if your eye makeup goes astray, just call it grunge and embrace it! Summer is about having fun, not worrying about your makeup.

  1. Swap big boots for platform sandals.

Unfortunately, a goth can only persevere for so long before it’s too hot for their favourite boots. When the time comes, why not stomp around in some platform sandals? You get all the height and chunky goodness with less of the sweaty feet situation.

The Wave 13 Bat Buckle Platform Sandals are the perfect alternative to your favourite boots during summer. The sky-high platform will have you walking tall, with bat buckle detailing to solidify your goth credentials. These amazing sandals are perfect for every gothic summer outfit. Pair them with shorts, flowy dresses, or an edgy mini-skirt for instant goth goodness.

  1. Carry an umbrella for shade on demand.

Get the best of both worlds by carrying an umbrella! You’re prepared for an inevitable summer downpour and can protect yourself from the beaming sun. Plus, you get to look like a classic Victorian lady strolling around town with a parasol. What’s not to love?

The collection of umbrellas at Attitude Clothing has an amazing choice of designs. From spiderwebs and space themes to pride flag umbrellas to keep you sheltered in style. This range gives you the perfect finishing touch for your gothic summer outfit.

Quick tips for beating the heat

Finally, we’re leaving you with some quick-fire tips for beating the heat and staying cool throughout the summer.

  • Where possible, avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day, usually between 11 AM and 3 PM.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol.
  • Keep your home cool by closing curtains during the hottest hours. Open windows to let the cool air circulate as the temperature drops in the evening.
  • Cool down with a cold shower or dip your hands and feet in cold water. Your wrists and ankles have many blood vessels close to the skin that help you cool down quicker.
  • Eat light meals, including foods with high water content, such as cucumber, celery and lettuce.
  • Avoid working out during the hottest hours of the day. Exercise gently early morning or later in the evening when the temperature isn’t so high.

We hope these tips will help you enjoy your gothic summer in style and comfort. Don’t forget your sun cream!
